Final year project
Navigation aid for the visually impaired
Aura - A system to encourage independent navigation in visually impaired users
The system uses two wrist worn haptic units to guide visually impaired users from one location to another. It features a lapel worn camera as a safeguarding measure. These are all charged through a unique dock.
Aura.wrist
Aura.wrist features interchangeable silicon bands, for complete customisation and expression. The device vibrates indicating the direction in which the user needs to turn.
Aura.camera
Aura.camera is a lapel camera that uses a magnetic clasping system to clip onto clothes. If the user is feeling lost or in need of assistance, they can push the front face which will call the emergency contact set up in the Aura.app.
Aeropress coffee machine
A fully functional coffee machine that required programming a microcontroller and creating an integrated system.
Motionlab Active Commute
The active commute bag, designed to take the weight off the wearers shoulders and reduce repetitive motion experienced during exercise.
Wireless mouse redesign
An existing mouse was replicated on CAD using surface modelling techniques, then developed with increased functionality and for additive manufacture.
Sam Dare
I am a designer that enjoys solving a variety of real world problems, taking projects from concept to production.
Final year has been an amazing opportunity to combine all the skills that I have developed at university and on placement into a few key projects. I enjoy and am capable at aspects of the design process, but my true passion lies in the technical elements; electronic development, programming, design for manufacture and prototyping. Following graduation, I aim to work with equally passionate designers to complete complex industry briefs to create innovating products and services.
